PAPUA NEW GUINEA

Here are 2 examples of quite recent P.N.G. pottery, both probably made for the tourist market but nevertheless, well potted and glazed and both decorated with designs in 'sgraffito'.

 The larger pot is 4½ high and 4½ inches in diameter.
The smaller is 4 inches high and 3 inches in diameter.
As can be seen in Photo No.2 - the larger pot is marked in paint O'TOM'S Pottery PNG 82 on the unglazed base.
The decoration on this pot is very similar to that on the P.N.G Ancestral Board  listed and illustrated under Ethnic Items.
The body is pale buff which has a gloss glaze inside and around the rim down to where the decoration starts, and here the glaze is a matt reddish brown with horizontal brush marks.

The smaller vase is marked with incised letters TOMMY PNG, with what appears to be K.J.W in the centre.
This vase is made with a terracotta clay and has a semi gloss glaze inside and out.
Most of the glaze is a celandon greenish colour, whilst that on the design around the sgraffito decoration is almost black and contrasts well with the terracotta clay.

Both very attractive pots and worth every cent of the $3.50 (AUD) I paid for them both about 10 years ago !
