STERLING SILVER SPOONS

I started collecting Sterling Silver spoons, because nearly everything else in Sterling Silver was so expensive.
I had hoped to collect a setting or so of Exeter Silver for our new grand-daughter, Ella Ruby, but soon found that Exeter flatware was quite rare and it would take  too long to collect.
So I went for spoons, caddy spoons, tablespoons, teaspoons, dessert spoons etc.

Below are some photos, with short descriptions, of the few items I have purchased in the past months.

Some of these items have links to other parts of my website.

1796 SPOON (Geo. 3rd.)

This is the oldest spoon I own made in the reign of Geo. 3rd.

(I consider the Hanoverians to be imposters, and claim the throne to my forebears, the Stuarts.
My relation, the 4th Earl of Derwentwater, was the last Earl to be beheaded in the Tower of London)

Rather stumpy rat-tail type extension from handle along the base of the bowl.  Such designs are excellent for giving added strength.

Pr of SERVING SPOONS - EXETER 1852

These are a pair of beautiful spoons, well hallmarked and with brilliantly engraved monograms, as shown in Photo 2.

I like collecting monogramed items -   I think it adds to the beauty and history of the piece.
Some monograms are more artistic than the article itself.

Pr SPOONS - EXETER 1864

These are the first Exeter Spoons I bought.  They are very robust, well hallmarked and nicely monogramed.

CASED SET OF APOSTLE SPOONS

This is a strange lot.  Marketed by W. Gibson & Co of Belfast & London, yet the items are not English Sterling Silver.

Has anyone any ideas ?

These are 100 years old now.  They were made in the middle of King Edward V11's reign.
Edwards's mistress,  Lillie Langtry  came from Jersey, Channel Islands, where I had an hotel in the 60's, curiously named The Prince of Wales Hotel in Greve de lecq.
Later I had a restaurant in Portelet Bay.  During this time I gleaned much information about the royal romance and the Le Breton family.
