This sad verse was written when I was suffering acute depression after the breakdown of my first marriage in the early 1960s

LIFE

What do we live for ?
Is it to bear the trouble and the pain
That comes into our lives time and again
So that gradually we become immune
To heartbreaks that return so soon
One after another ?

Or is the sorrow only sent
With good intent
To make the happiness we sometimes steal
Stay in our thoughts and seem more real
Somehow or other ?
